Another Great Secret Shopping Article

BAKERSFIELD - Getting paid to relax on a cruise ship and spend money is not too far fetched of an idea.

In fact, some residents in Kern County are secretly enjoying the lifestyle of a mystery shopper without quitting their day jobs.

Mystery shoppers are paid to shop and evaluate sales reps based on customer service.

"Patricia" is a 9-year veteran of the gig and she's armed with questions to keep clerks on their toes - return policies, warranty, and price.

A 20-or-30 minute trip to a retail store gets Patricia about $1,200, and she gets reimbursed for purchases less than $20.

But the perks don't stop there.

Mystery shoppers are in restaurants scoring waiters and hanging out at top-notch resorts rating concierge services.

"Most mystery shoppers are stay-at-home moms, retired, or part time or people who enjoy shopping," said the President of Business Evaluation Services Charles Stiles.

Stiles hires mystery shoppers.

There are currently more than 200,000 shoppers in his database from all over the country, and about 200 new shoppers sign up every month.

Many of them only get enough assignments to do it part-time.

"In order for someone to be a professional shopper and make a living out of it, they need to live in a large city like Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York," said Stiles.

There are scores of "shoppers wanted" ads in the newspapers and a plethora of websites online. But steer clear from anything that asks for money like a membership fee, Stiles said.

"If you ever have to pay to be a mystery shopper, it's a scam," said Stiles.

A good place to start would be the Mystery Shopper Provider Association Websites.

It provides a long list of legitimate companies looking to hire shoppers locally and all over the U.S.

"The sales people are the ones that need the warning," said Patricia. "They need to give excellent customer service to everybody because they never know who we are."

But mystery shoppers can be competitive when it comes to getting good assignments. Typically, there are 50 secret shoppers who apply for every mission.
